2012 Meets' Reports

January 2012 our belated ‘Christmas’ meet,– Beckstones hut, Duddon Valley, southern Lake District. As our annual dinner meet could not take place in early December 2011 it was decided we would instead have two in 2012! This was possibly the best weekend weather wise in the whole of January (depending on your interests!). The arrivals fell into two camps: Friday night for the walkers & runners, and Saturday for those ‘volunteers’ cooking the meal in the hut.

Saturday presented us with bright skies and interesting light to appreciate the fantastic views. Mollie, Stuart, Brian & Barry walked from the hut over to Stickle Pike (the other one), while Ges and Tina drove to Ulpha Bridge and commenced their walk through the Dunnerdale Fells. Due to a mishap, John’s walking boots remained in Bedford with Mollie’s logs. Luckily he was able to borrow some running shoes and set off with Richard to explore the area. The others headed off towards Seathwaite & beyond.

By the time everyone returned the hut was a hive of activity, with mouth watering smells emanating from the kitchen under the guidance of Jo and Mike. An almost constant train of food emerged, which was enough to feed everyone two times over (even John). The evening concluded with Kate and David performing various folk songs.

Sunday saw Jo, Kate & David heading off on their mountain bikes, and everyone else pursuing a variety of walks and runs. Mollie and Barry set off towards Harter Fell to spend a few hours in the company of a Fell described by Alfred Wainwright as "beautiful."
Overall a good weekend in the Lake District with weather that felt more autumnal than wintry. Hopefully the next annual dinner of 2012 in December will be as much fun. <Barry Dackombe>
